Looking to recruit Cole (Lewis Tan) for her latest mission, Sonya (Jessica McNamee) debriefs him on the meaning of his dragon symbol birthmark. She reveals they first learned about it seven years ago during a failed mission in Brazil to capture a wanted fugitive. Her team, which included Jax (Mehcad Brooks), was decimated by fugitive thanks to his supernatural abilities. The birthmark is in fact an invitation to a deadly tournament of champions known as Mortal Kombat. Those invited to this tournament include Mileena (Sisi Stringer), Hanzo Hasashi (Hiroyuki Sanada), Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Kano (Josh Lawson), Kung Lao (Max Lang), and Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim). Some will fight for the fate of the Earth as champions for Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), while others will fight for nefarious Shang Tsung (Chin Han).
