In the trailer for the miniseries A Confession, a young woman named Sian has gone missing and her mother Elaine (Siobhan Finneran) tries to explain to her young son what has happened. Karen Edwards (Imelda Staunton), the mother of another missing girl, fears that her own daughter's body has been found. When the police confront a suspect and he refuses to talk, Detective Superintendent Steve Fulcher (Martin Freeman) steps in, but his superiors warn him he's breaching every code of practice. Fulcher goes ahead with his questioning, hoping Sian is alive and that the suspect will tell him where to find her.
