Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) is reading a book and describes it as a story about heroes who get to go on adventures, defeat monsters (white policemen), and save the day. He decides to look for his missing father and find the secret birthright that's been kept from his family. The family embarks on a road trip in 1950s America as they struggle to overcome not just the rampant racism of the day but supernatural horrors.
