Danny was born in Miami, Florida, to Cuban parents. After graduating from Miami Coral Park High School he went on to study at the Florida International University, where he graduated from in 1996. Around this time, Danny began to develop an interest in becoming a professional actor, and joined New York University's Graduate Acting Program at the Tisch School of Arts. After graduating, he began auditioning for television and film roles.

Danny made his screen acting debut in 2001 when he landed a starring role as Clay on the television show Men, Women & Dogs, which would run for 13 episodes.

He also appeared in several TV films, such as Point of Origin (2002), Lucy (2003) and NYPD 2069 (2004).

In 2003 Danny had a career breakthrough when he landed the regular role of Detective Scotty Valens on the series Cold Case (2003-2010). His work on the show earned him a nomination for the Imagen Award for Best Supporting Actor-Television in 2005 and Best Actor-Television in 2006. It was not until 2010 when he finally won the Imagen Award for Best Actor-Television for his work. While working on Cold Case, Danny also wrote two episodes for the show: "Stealing Home" and "Metamorphosis."

In 2011, Danny began playing Detective Nick Amaro on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2011-2015). When he took on the role, it was initially intended to be a recurring one, but the character's popularity continued to grow among loyal viewers to the point where it was turned into a regular one. Being a part of a popular show that had already garnered commercial and critical success helped Danny solidify himself in the entertainment industry. His work as Detective Nick Amaro also earned him an Imagen Award for Best Supporting Actor-Television in 2015.

His most recent project brought him back to the big screen, playing Larry Mora in the motion picture version of the Broadway hit musical, Dear Evan Hansen (2021).

Growing up, acting was not one of Danny's dreams. He first aspired to be a baseball player, a lawyer, or even part of the Coast Guard, as he was also a lifeguard during his teen years in Miami.

Danny married Lilly Pino Bernal on February 15, 2002. They first met during a middle-school theater class. After meeting, the two of them continued to pursue their studies together, attending the same school throughout junior high, high school, college and graduate school.
